消息指，事發時，受傷青年與友人一行7人正行山，行至近馬鞍山昂平山時遇上意外。
天文台於中午12時15分發出黃色暴雨警告信號 ，顯示香港廣泛地區已錄得或預料會有每小時雨量超過30毫米的大雨，約1小時後取消黃色暴雨警告。
資料顯示，一般郊遊人士都可應付由馬鞍山村至昂平的路段，難度不高，且是拾級而上，一般天氣和緩慢步伐，由馬鞍山村起步，不到1小時便到達昂平平原。
