United States Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday encouraged his fellow senators to reject Gina Haspel's nomination for CIA director.
Haspel, who is seeking to become the first female director of the CIA, will face what is expected to be a tight vote following her confirmation hearing amid concerns over her past involvement with the CIA's harsh interrogation program following the September 11 terror attacks.
Senator McCain called for the Senate to reject Haspel's nomination as her "refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying"
"In my view — a view shared by all nine former directors and acting directors — the CIA was able to collect valuable intelligence that contributed to the prevention of further terrorist attacks. That said, it is impossible to know whether the CIA could have obtained the same information in another way," she wrote.

Hawaii Kilauea volcano: Larger explosions possible
A large explosion in Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could lead to an explosive eruption and send boulders, rocks and ash into the air in the coming weeks, the US Geological Survey (USGA) said on Wednesday.
The volcano, located on the US state's Big Island, is one of the world's most active volcanos. Last Thursday, it began releasing lava into two fissures that opened 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the summit crater.
The USGA warned that more violent eruptions could begin mid-May, ejecting blocks up to six feet (two meters) in diameter over a half-a-mile away from the crater. It may also shoot pebbles into the air several miles away, and dust areas up to 20 miles away with ash.

Iran targets Israeli bases across Syrian frontier, Israel pounds Syria
JERUSALEM/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Iranian forces in Syria launched a rocket attack on Israeli army bases in the Golan Heights early on Thursday, Israel said, prompting one of the heaviest Israeli barrages in Syria since the conflict there began in 2011.
The attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, just past midnight, marked the first time Iranian forces have hit Israel from Syria, where they have deployed along with Iran-backed Shi’ite militias and Russian troops to support President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.
Syrian state media said dozens of Israeli missiles hit a radar station, Syrian air defense positions and an ammunition dump, underscoring the risks of a wider escalation involving Iran and its regional allies.
Israel said 20 Iranian Grad and Fajr rockets were shot down by its Iron Dome air defense system or fell short of the Golan targets. The Quds Force, an external arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, carried out the launch, Israel said. Israel struck back by destroying dozens of Iranian military sites in Syria, Conricus said, as well as Syrian anti-aircraft units that tried unsuccessfully to shoot down Israeli planes.
