When the British Nationality Act 1948 came into effect in 1949, most British Subjects became Citizens of the UK and Colonies (CUKC). When a British colony became independent, the UK Parliament would pass an Act which usually resulted in the removal of CUKC status of the citizens of these newly independent countries. For those CUKC who did not receive the citizenship of the newly independent country, they would retain British Overseas Citizenship.
