I don't see the benefit of pumping more tax money into a system that a) likely won't produce more tax revenue long-term, and b) doesn't necessarily produce valuable research. Keeping scholarships pegged to inflation would be fine, and they are overdue for a bump. However, the system needs an overhaul beyond simply boosting grad student/postdoc salaries.
More degrees does not necessarily correlate to more lifetime earnings. It's an open secret that science chases fads and hot topics in search of grant money (read: tax dollars). What ever happened to string theory, eh?
All this student/postdoc funding commitment guarantees is that the value of graduate degrees continues to be eroded due to oversupply, the same way bachelor's degrees have become a baseline requirement for nearly every entry-level position.
