Autohold uses the hydraulic system, so it's an automatic function of the foot brake. Similar to how the service brakes are used with the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function.
The electromechanical parking brake (EMF) is only used as a handbrake, when parking, or when additionally applied by the driver. So no reason to wear pads more than using the service (foot) brakes.
Autohold is controlled by the DSC pump/control, not the EMF actuators.
