I have to visit Montreal often on business before I retired. Sometimes as often as every two weeks.
I can managed with no French. However, driving was a bit of an issue. All parking lots and meters are in French. I have trouble following under ground parking garages instructions. Hotels, restaurants and shopping etc. are English friendly.
Part of my duties was to review certain documents. It was an issue if the documents were in French only. Sometimes the Companies will provide an English version but more often than not, they only have them in French. I have to request the assistance of another French speaking co-worker.
Depending on what you are planning to do in Montreal, French is most likely essential if you work in an office. However, there are those who managed to survive in Montreal with little or no French.
