Lobbing the ball is a pretty underrated technique to get out of a tricky situation. When you need to play a long ball but are afraid of getting it intercepted, a lob ball will rarely hit anyone, and usually provides enough time for your player to go unmarked and comfortably receive the ball.
This is also very useful when clearing the ball with your Goalkeeper - by lobbing the ball, you won't risk hitting a pressing centre forward as often.
You can lob the ball by pressing R2+Circle.
