Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said Thursday that the state Supreme Court's decision to strike down his administration's stay-at-home order during the coronavirus pandemic could lead to "many more people" becoming sick and overwhelming hospitals.

"But not if we stay the course and stay home," Evers, a Democrat, said at a news conference, adding, "If you don't feel safe enough, then go home."

He urged people not to allow the court ruling to undo the "hard work" Wisconsin has put in to slowing the spread of the virus, and he urged those who go out to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Since March, more than 50,000 more people have died in the UK than usual - a clear sign of the devastation being reaped by Covid-19.

And the latest data suggests the burden of fatalities is being shifted from hospitals into the community, as the number of excess deaths in people's homes surges.

While the official coronavirus death toll lingers around 33,000, the Government has insisted tracking excess deaths is the best measure of the impact of the pandemic.

Measuring the number of excess deaths (above the five-year weekly average) reveals more than 10,000 have occurred in people's homes in England and Wales since March 6, and almost 20,000 in care homes.

When deaths in Scotland and Northern Ireland are taken into account, more than 50,000 excess deaths have occurred across the UK in just 11 weeks.
