Doing so surely impacts the popularity of Notepad++: talking about politics is exactly what software and commercial companies generally try to avoid. The problem is, if we don’t deal with politics, politics will deal with us. We can choose to not act when people are being oppressed, but when it’s our turn to be oppressed, it will be too late and there will be no one for us. You don’t need to be Uyghur or a Muslim to act, you need only to be a human and have empathy for our fellow humans.

開源純文字編輯軟體notepad++日前釋出代號為「自由維吾爾」（Free Uyghur）的7.8.1版，引來不滿的中國使用者湧入GitHub留言灌爆，而Notepad++網站也遭DDoS攻陷斷線數小時。
在釋出新版同時，Notepad++開發人員Don Ho透過部落格分享中國在新疆維吾爾地區的作為，包括實施再教育營關押當地穆斯林。Ho說，雖然有人叫他不要把Notepad++和政治扯上關係，但「你不碰政治，政治也會來找你」，因此他不但以「自由維吾爾」作為新版本的代號，也呼籲用戶採取行動，例如打電話給當地議員要求對中國施加壓力。
不過作者在GitHub貼出此文後引來中國用戶的不滿。Notepad++的GitHub Issue網頁湧入大批以英文及簡體中文的批評。有人要求政治發言不應出現在Github討論區。雖然大部份開發人員要求理性討論，但也有部份情緒發言，有人說以前不用、未來也不會再用Notepad++。另外也有人懷疑開發人員根本是台獨份子。
另外，根據The Verge及ZDNet報導，Notepad++網站昨日遭到DDoS攻擊斷線數小時，但由代管業者Cloudflare阻擋後恢復上線。
