CCP is playing "nationalism" card now. After so much brain washing in mass media, people in mainland china either do not understand what is going on or hate the movement or protestors in HK!
Chinese officials got education in politics and related philosophy at school since they are little. Every action, big or small, has a political motives in both from short and long term. Without that understanding, HK people may get trapped or misled easily. Books, history, or older folks like KOL Mr. Siu ( I believe HKU graduate in History) may give some insights.
Absolutely cannot underestimate CCP and whoever they helped to train in technical skills and strategies. I guess they may have trained Popo's PTU and STS. Sometimes CCP/ popo retreat = setup for next move /stage/ trap !

CCP will sacrifice everything to keep the Party secure !! Worst come to worst, I feel like they want everything above ground in HK except for HK people. Cost is so little for CCP to sit behind the scene to see HK people fighting and hating each other which is very hard to recover.
It may only take 1-2 generations to dilute a good chunk of all HK natives. The hardware are all planned many years ago and ready in place: Bridges, visa policies, transportation, 5g technology /smart city to attract young people, 大口灣 project, etc.. are all set up! So the channel is ready to do dilution! I
